This approx. 7,000 acre ranch is located
25 miles straight south of Tucumcari, a small town of 5,500 people conveniently located on I-40, between Albuquerque, New Mexico and Amarillo, Texas.
We offer un-guided mule deer hunting, and can also put you in contact with a
local guide if you prefer a guided hunt. A comfortable cabin is located at
the foot of the heavily wooded Caprock and accommodates four hunters.
The ranch has a
diverse topography - the north end is mostly open, rolling country,
while the south end is very rugged and steep. Traversing the ranch
on the south end is the approx. 400 feet tall "Caprock", an
abrupt escarpment which separates the Quay valley below from the
Llano Estacado with its farm lands on top. Steep canyons come off the rim, mostly covered by
pinon and juniper and various browse and brush. The mule deer
feed on the alfalfa and wheat fields on top during the night, and seek shelter
in the protection of the canyons below the Caprock during the day. The deer are also found in the open country below.
We offer un-guided
mule deer hunting, however, a local guide is available upon
request. In the future, we hope to offer turkey, antelope
as well as quail hunting. We take only a very limited number of hunters,
and you and your friends will have the exclusive trespass right on the
ranch for the duration of your hunt. Our hunting package
includes un-guided hunting and accommodation in our cabin. We suggest you plan on arriving around noon the day before you start
hunting when we will show you the boundaries etc.
Our fully equipped cabin,
which comfortably accommodates 4 hunters, is conveniently located at the
foothill of the Caprock. This is an old homestead we have renovated. It has a fully equipped kitchen area, and we provide sheets
and towels. We recommend bringing sleeping-bags for extra warmth
in case of cold temperatures. Hunters are expected to read and sign a Liability
Release Form and to comply with our "common sense rules" as well
as any and all New
Mexico hunter rules and regulations. Click
here for information. Hunters can rent the cabin for additional
nights if they wish to do some scouting before hunting.
It is very difficult
to get a picture of the deer on the ranch, as they are quick to take
off. We have come across some awfully nice buck.
This buck was taken fall of
2005. Not many buck were seen that year due to mountain lions
taking several and keeping the others scattered. In 2006 we had
only archery hunters, no rifle hunters, who saw some nice buck but never
could get close enough to harvest one.
Our cancellation
policy is as follows:
Cancellation 6 months or more prior to scheduled arrival date - half of deposit
refunded; cancellation less than 6 months prior
to scheduled arrival date - full deposit retained. In the event we should have to
cancel a reservation for whatever reason, we reserve the right to do so, in
which case we will promptly refund the full deposit.
The hunting unit is
#40. New Mexico has gone to a draw system starting 2005 on Public
Lands. However, you can purchase a Private-Land-Only license
over-the-counter. Visit the New
Mexico Game and Fish Department's website for application procedure and
fees.
2006 deer hunting seasons are as follows:
Muledeer Rifle Hunt
Nov. 3 - 7
Nov. 17 - 21
$1,200/person
Muledeer Archery / Bow Hunt
Jan. 1 - 15, 2008
$ 800/person
We do
everything we can to create an attractive wildlife habitat for the deer
and other wildlife to inhabit the ranch. However, since
we are not high-fenced, we cannot make any guarantees as to hunt
success. As a hunter, you realize that factors beyond our control
play a role in the deer's behavior, mainly weather and predators.
We do have an occasional lion traveling through the ranch which will
scatter the deer.
We hope to see you here at the JX Ranch
for a fun and rewarding muledeer hunt!
